Editorial PensCheck Winter 2024

Despite the rejection of the BVG/LPP reform in autumn 2024, many companies are taking the initiative themselves. They are implementing key points from the reform voluntarily and recognise the importance of strong pension provision for themselves and their employees.

Taking action rather than waiting

A look back at the BVG/LPP referendum in September 2024 shows that although the proposal was rejected, many companies had already acted before the reform anyway. They have long since assumed responsibility and independently implemented key elements of the reform. The renewed wait for policymakers could take a long time.

Become dependent on a pension or take personal responsibility?

Strong pension provision is crucial for Switzerland. However, the federal government’s austerity plans that are being discussed could make it less attractive. According to the expert group led by Serge Gaillard, higher taxation on lump-sum withdrawals should generate more revenue for the federal government. Above all, the withdrawal of actuarial capital means taking personal responsibility. In 2023, around 41 percent of beneficiaries opted in favour of drawing capital and against pension dependency.

Nothing has been decided yet with regard to the federal government’s austerity plans. Companies and insured persons should stick to their long-term strategies. Voluntary contributions to pension funds and pillar 3a strengthen your pension provision and offer attractive tax benefits.
