1. Do I know what I want to do in the years after I retire?
Not financially – more in terms of how you want to spend your time. What will I give up once I’ve stepped away from the business? What happens next?
2. Do I have a succession plan in place that allows me to let go?
Many business owners postpone succession planning – it’s complex, the timing isn’t right and letting go is difficult. Longevity makes this planning more urgent: the earlier you start, the more options you have.
3. As a self-employed individual, is my retirement planning as strong as that of an employee with a solid pension plan?
Self-employed people have more flexibility than employees – but also more personal responsibility. If you don’t actively make use of that flexibility, you’ll end up with less, not more.
If you know how you want to live, you can plan accordingly. And the earlier you start, the more options you have.

4. Will my retirement assets last for another twenty to thirty years?
Most retirement plans were designed for a retirement period of around ten years. Today, this phase of life is often twice as long. A plan that doesn’t take this into account isn’t a plan, it’s a gap.
5. Have I aligned my retirement planning with my tax strategy?
Retirement planning without tax planning is only half the job. When to withdraw, how to withdraw, in what order – all of this has significant tax implications. If you plan early, you can save significant amounts.
6. Do I have someone I can truly rely on – independent and free of conflicts of interest?
Longevity is a long journey. It requires guidance– not from someone who wants to sell me a product today, but from someone who knows my situation and represents my interests.
